"The myth of the Flyer (originally called 'Sburătorul') in Romanian folklore is that of a supernatural creature who visits young women and seduces them. He is a mysterious figure, often portrayed in fairytales as a tall, slim, young man, who only ever comes at night and visits his victims in their sleep. The appeal and irresistibility of the flyer have much to do with his otherworldly beauty and his aura of mystery. His seduction is derived from his aesthetic; his features are angel like and the pain he causes is all the sweeter for it. He is most commonly thought of as a young man in love who has been denied contact with the woman of his affection, usually by her parents. Prohibited from seeing her, the lover takes the Flyer’s form and enters the girl’s chamber where he proceeds to kiss her, bite her and torment her in various ways while she sleeps."
